Microsoft Windows popularized solitaire when it included it in their game kit. The game has been a part of the Windows operating system for over 31 years and is still going strong. Klondike Solitaire, FreeCell Solitaire, Spider Solitaire, Pyramid Solitaire, and TriPeaks Solitaire are currently included in the Microsoft Solitaire Collection. The underlying reason for integrating the game in their operating system was to get Microsoft Windows customers acquainted with the drag-and-drop feature. However, the game grew in popularity over time, which was not surprising. Surprisingly, the game continues to be popular among people of various ages. The popularity of solitaire can be attributed to five main factors.

Spider Solitaire, the renowned card game has evolved into something more than a platform for acquiring computer skills after all these years. For many people, it is an addiction.

    History of Solitaire Card Games

Although the origins of Card Solitaire or Patience are unknown, the oldest recordings date from the late 1700s in northern Europe and Scandinavia. Das new Königliche L'Hombre-Spiel, a German book published in 1788, contains the term Patiencespiel. In the early 1800s, books were also reported to arrive in Sweden and Russia. Patience is mentioned several times in French literature.

Klondike Solitaire, the most popular solitaire game, is the card game that many people associate with Solitaire. Although it was first played with a physical deck of cards, Microsoft Solitaire, a digital version bundled with the Windows operating system from 1990 onwards, helped popularize the game.

PySol forks are open-source, platform-independent implementations of hundreds of solitaire games. Many different software implementations of solitaire exist, and it is still widely played as a recreational game on computers, mobile devices, and the internet.
